Newmarket - The Rowley Mile
Newmarket consists of two different racecourses, the July Course is employed during the summer and the Rowley Mile utilised for the Spring and Autumn meetings. The Rowley mile is the venue for the two classics ran at Newmarket, the 1000 and 2000 Guineas, both ran early in May.
The Rowley Mile is about two and a quarter miles long and includes a right handed bend after a mile, races of ten furlongs or less are ran on the straight section. The course is quite wide and the final straight is relatively flat until the decent into a dip, whereupon the field have to race uphill for the final furlong. The ascent required in the final furlong tests even the greatest competitors and the Rowley Mile is one of the most demanding trips in the country.
